33 year old train's last day in the Midlands
Central Trains last 1960's "slam door" train makes its final run today on a round trip between Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Liverpool. The 33 year old train is being withdrawn nearly three years ahead of John Prescott's deadline for rail operators to scrap "slam door" rolling stock.
Once the backbone of West Midlands local and long distance electric services, the Class 310 train regularly worked on the Lichfield /Redditch Cross City Line, Coventry/Wolverhampton local services and services between Birmingham and Walsall.
Commenting on the last Class 310 train Central Trains Managing Director Andy Cooper says: "I am delighted that we have been able to respond so quickly to the Deputy Prime Minister's call to axe "slam door" trains. Central Trains £74 million investment in 33 new trains means that the last of our 1960's rolling stock can now be withdrawn".
CENTRO Passenger Services Director Tom Magrath added: "The 310's have given sterling service in the West Midlands over the last 30 years, but they do not have the levels of comfort, performance and access that modern trains can offer. I am pleased that all local electric services are now operated by modern rolling stock, allowing Central Trains to withdraw the Class 310's in line with their franchise commitment".
Introduced by British Rail in 1967 when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, The Beatles were top of the charts and the present station at Birmingham New Street was only a year old: The first 310's operated services between Birmingham and London via Northampton. They were later allocated to other parts of the country but in the early 1990's they returned to the West Midlands to operate on the newly electrified Lichfield to Redditch "Cross City" Line. Systematically replaced by the new Class 323 electric trains, some 310's were retained to help accommodate the massive passenger growth witnessed in the Midlands over recent years.
